Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) is very common in the United States. Over 10 million people suffer from this Disorder. Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction can be caused by several different daily activities that we are not even aware we are doing. Bad posture habits, chronic jaw clenching at night, problems with teeth alignment, and lockjaw are the most common causes. Bad posture habits can cause the jaw to rest in an open position which make the chewing muscles to become overused. Clenching your jaw overnight, usually because of stress, can cause extra strain on the TMJ and surrounding muscles. Some symptoms of TMD include: jaw pain, jaw fatigue, difficulty opening your mouth to eat or talk, ringing in your ears, dizziness, headaches, popping sounds in your jaw, neck pain, and locking jaw. Fuller Physical Therapy evaluates the patient and creates a patient specific treatment plan. We tend to use posture education, diet modifications, improve jaw movement with exercises, and alleviate pain with trigger point dry needling.
